The Return Of Tomorrow
FU MANCHU
The Return Of Tomorrow (At The Dojo)
All hail the triumphant return of the AC/DC of stoner rock: always solid, reassuringly reliable, locked in their own hermetically sealed bong-smoke-filled bubble, paying zero attention to the outside world, happily knocking out tracks called things like Loch Ness Wrecking Machine. From the moment Dehumanize lunges at you out of the speakers with that trademark guitar tone you can chew on, you’re under the sway of the fuzz overlords.
Single Hands Of The Zodiac is a vintage thrill; (Time Is) Pulling You Under is made for the open road (and getting a speeding ticket); and Haze The Hides plays the time-honoured but eternally effective trick of using the bassline to foreshadow the riff to come, those guitars hanging over your head like a sword of Damocles. According to founding vocalist/guitarist Scott Hill, the second half of this double LP, The Return Of Tomorrow, is mellower – though it’s fair to say his definition of “mellow” may be unique.
Never change, Fu Manchu – not that they’re likely to.
